Weed mat is fine for paths tends to fray on the edges and break down in sunlight cover it well and it works ok.

The thickness of mulch on top of the weed will be more important than an extra layer of mat and even with a mat and a thick layer of mulch you still have to deal with seeds that blow in or from animal droppings. In the veggie garden we used newspapers and decomposed granite but the weeds still come up in that. In some areas we used weed mat and i don t think it was worth it. That s my second resolution for 2018.
