J 24 Keel Floors

The general deck configuration and rig is the second area that has contribution to the 24 s success.

The nine boats were rotated among skippers after each race. J 2 may 2003 updated cover sheet to 2003 2004 class rules j 3 added note 6 to item 4 on page 11. When i poked at it it disintegrated in to a grey mush. 2006 added keel vee angle limitation of 90 degrees maximum.

June 2003 k 1 added keel bottom reference dimension mar. My j 24 just failed measurement due to the cord length of the keel being more than max length. There is some flare to the topsides and overall i d say that this is a very attractive hull shape. In a six race regatta the winning skippers of each fleet j 24 sonar morc phrf etc raced in j 24s to determine the skipper of the year. It was suggested to us that we could just grind down the trailing edge of the keel to make it meausure in but then it would likely be too far forward since it was within 8 millimeters of max forward. Um paul s pretty good at his job having been a consultant on some ac work and done some fast custom starboat keels for the likes of bill buchan. Harken has led the way in developing hardware systems for the j 24.

2004 l 1 may 2005 clarified keel bottom vee and reference of parallelism of keel sections to keel bottom. Mast ok sails very old but useable. The following regatta results demonstrate the significance of the keel on j 24 performance. The class has wisely allowed the development of new hardware systems to keep the boat up to date and easy to race.

All looked good till i looked at the keel inside. The keel is a fairly high aspect ratio keel and the rudder is outboard with no balance at all. The sump had a bit of water in it probably condensate but there was an ominous looking gap around the edge of the floor pan to hull joint. No visible signs of heavy grounding or hull keel damage.

The j 24 is also popular with weekend club sailors because it is fun responsive in all conditions and can be easily handled by one or two people.
