I have some beautiful ornaments that are not labeled for use in aquariums so i put them outside my aquariums and fish bowls.
Using just regular fired clay would work but i would imagine that it would gunk up pretty fast due to its porous nature.
The truth is that some ceramic ornaments are perfectly safe while others leach fish toxic heavy metals as the glaze dissolves.
