The hardwood floor guys told me the best transition between the two is a t molding. Miter the corners as with the base molding. In many cases the flooring that is being replaced is not as tall as the hardwoods that are being installed and the door trim and stops will need to be cut to accommodate the width of the hardwood floors. If you re dealing with concrete subfloors they cannot be fastened to the concrete and will have to be glued.

Attach the shoe molding. Most professionals generally use pl400 adhesive or similar when handling this project. When installing shoe edge or quarter round moldings do not drive in nails or staples at a downward angle. You simply leave a gap between the two floors and then place down the t molding between the two floors so it sits on both surfaces.

Ideally the t molding is perfectly centered in a doorway. However the height difference of the two floors is considerable and the t molding does not sit flush. Cut the base shoe a quarter round molding that goes at the bottom of the base molding to length and attach it with a finish nailer. When attaching the base shoe quarter round nail the molding into the bottom of the existing baseboard and not into the flooring itself. You should fasten shoe molding using an 18 gauge finish nailer with 1 inch nails. In almost every hardwood flooring job you ll be required to lay hardwoods under at least one side of a door.

T moldings are usually installed to separate ceramic tile and wood floors. Pre drilling is highly recommended to avoid splitting and splintering when fastening with nails or staples. Shoe molding should be tacked to the baseboard not the floor which inhibits floor expansion beneath the shoe molding. Start with the longest unbroken wall usually the outside wall.

Fill any nail holes and apply any touch up as needed.
