Install Wood Floors Over Sleepers

Before installing wood flooring on the sleepers add a layer of 15 or 30 pound asphalt felt over the subfloor panels as an additional vapor barrier.

The frame is then securely fastened to the floor with concrete fasteners to keep the sleeper from potentially moving when your house settles. If power washing is required in the basement do so before wood flooring is installed and allow subfloor and basement to dry before installing wood flooring. A vapor retarder is recommended any time you install a solid 3 4 inch wood flooring over concrete. Set the first sheet of underlayment tongue to the wall with the long side perpendicular to the sleepers and 1 2 inch from the wall.

Don t drive screws at the grooved edge yet. Over concrete with a wood subfloor. The studs are used to first make a box around the perimeter of the room and the remaining studs are placed inside of the frame 16 inches apart. Basements and crawl spaces must be dry.

Nail the finished flooring to the sleepers through the film. Either line them up directly over the joists that lie beneath the subfloor or run them perpendicular to the joists. Before installing the floor loosely lay an additional vapor retarder of 4 to 6 mil polyethylene film over the sleepers overlapping the edges on top of the 2 x 4s. Avoid a sleeper layout where the boards are parallel to the joists but run between them because this configuration lacks structural support.
