If you re framing an 8 x 10 picture and make an 8 x 10 frame you will have no room for mat board.
Inside mat sizes for frames.
Many professional framers including frame destination recommend a mat border of 2 to 4 inches unless you have a specific look in mind that calls for a wider or narrower mat.
For example if you have a 4x6 image you will want to order a 4x6 frame.
Many of these options have a window mat as well which offers space for two sizes.
8x10 and 5x7 floater frames.
The size of the photograph in the following example is 5x8 which is not one of our standard sizes.

They are constructed to allow space between the outside of the artwork and the inside of the frame.

Photo and art prints are often matted however which adds another dimension to your framing project.
You have to make a larger frame for example an 11 x 14 frame so you can put a mat around your 8 x 10 picture.
Find your mat board s inner dimensions.
The inner dimensions or window of the mat board should be 1 2 to 1 4 inches less than the dimensions of your piece of art.

All of our frames are measured by the inside dimensions.
Our standard sizes all have windows that are 1 4 less the size of the intended print size.
Most mats are at least 2 inches wide and not more than 4 inches wide.
The inner cut of the mat will be at least 1 4th inch inside the outer dimension of the art work.
The frame size the measurement of the inside of the frame is the same as the print so a 5 x 7 print will fit in a 5 x 7 frame.
